Fuse boards that were fitted a long time ago

Calcot is largely a late twentieth-century suburb on the western side of Reading, with estates of semis, terraces and maisonettes that mostly date from the 1960s and 1970s. A good number have been well kept, but the electrics inside are now decades old, unless somebody has updated them.

Common findings are a consumer unit from the 1990s or early 2000s, sockets that have been added one at a time, and original cable in the walls that still works but has not been looked at in decades. None of that is a crisis, but it is worth knowing what you have before an appliance or a charger is added.

A suburb beside the M4 and the Bath Road

Calcot is close to junction 12 of the M4, and the A4 Bath Road runs along its southern side towards Theale. Residents often commute by car, and many streets have garages built as separate blocks or integral to the house. Cul-de-sacs and short closes are common, with houses facing each other across shared parking.

For electrical work, that layout is useful and awkward in equal measure. Garage blocks may have no supply at all, or only an old spur. Cable routes to parking spaces cross shared ground in some closes, which can mean permission from a neighbour or a management company. Getting that sorted early saves delay.

Services available to Calcot homes

Calcot customers ask for all five of our main services, but a few come up most often, and the order below reflects that.

If you are stuck between a repair and a bigger job, describe the symptoms and we will explain the choice in plain words, without pushing you towards the larger option.

Consumer unit rules have tightened over the years. Boards fitted a couple of decades ago may lack RCD protection on every circuit, and some have plastic enclosures that are not what would be fitted today. That does not mean an old board is dangerous, but it does mean a test is worthwhile.

  • Protection. Modern boards disconnect faults faster and isolate individual circuits.
  • Space. A new board has room for extra circuits for a charger, an oven or a garage.
  • Labelling. Clear labels make faults quicker to trace later.

The price depends on the number of circuits, the position of the meter and whether earthing or bonding needs improving at the same time.

When to call straight away and when to wait

Some problems are urgent. If you smell burning, see scorching or hear buzzing from a socket or the consumer unit, switch off the affected circuit and call us. If anyone is injured or there is a fire, call 999 first. A power cut that affects neighbours is a matter for your network operator, reached free on 105.

Problems that can wait for a normal appointment include a single dead socket with no sign of heat, a light that needs a new fitting or a charger enquiry. Tell us what you have seen and we will help you decide, rather than push you into an emergency call.

Asking for a Calcot quote

Fill in the form or ring 01632 960071. We serve Calcot but are not located there, so your request is how we confirm availability and timing.

  1. Describe the fault or the project, and say when it started if it is a fault.
  2. Tell us what kind of home it is, such as a semi, terrace or maisonette, and who owns the shared areas.
  3. Photograph the consumer unit with the cover off only if you can do so safely. If in doubt, leave it closed.
  4. We discuss the work and arrange a visit.
  5. A written quote follows.

The enquiry is free and carries no commitment.

Questions about Calcot

Is a 1970s consumer unit unsafe?

Not necessarily, but it may be out of date. Older units often have fewer protective devices and lack modern standards. The only way to know is to inspect and test it. If it passes and the circuits are in good order, it may be fine for now. If not, replacing it is a straightforward job that we can price.

What should I do if my electrics keep tripping?

Note which circuit trips and what was running. Unplug appliances on that circuit and reset once. If it trips with nothing connected, there is a fault in the wiring or a fitting, and you should leave it off and call. If it only trips with one appliance, that appliance is the likely cause and should be repaired or replaced.

Can I install an EV charger in a garage block?

Possibly. The garage needs a safe supply, and a detached block usually requires armoured cable and separate protection. If you share the block, you may need the owner's or management company's consent. The charger also needs to be reachable by your car. We check these points during a visit and tell you if the idea is not practical.

Do you need access to my loft for a rewire?

Usually yes, since cable often runs through the loft to reach upstairs lights and then down walls to sockets. Clear access to the hatch and as much space as you can. If there is a loft conversion or no loft at all, tell us in advance, because the cable route will be different and may need more floor lifting.

Will you tell me honestly if I do not need the work?

Yes. If a test shows that a simple repair does the job, we will say so rather than quote for something larger. If a rewire is not yet necessary, we will explain what to watch for and when to have it checked again. A quote is only useful if it matches what the property needs.
